  1. Dear PC font user:  
  2.   
  3. We at Altsys are proud to announce the availability of Fontographer 3.2, the  
  4. first Macintosh PostScript font program that can produce fonts for the ATM  
  5. (Adobe Type Manager) Windows environment on MS-DOS computers.  
  6.   
  7. Accompanying this README.TXT file is the Caligula font. Caligula is a crude  
  8. representation of what was originally a calligraphic bitmap font autotraced  
  9. by  
  10. Fontographer 3.2. There are no kerning pairs in this font and it should  
  11. probably be use only in sizes 24pt or larger. It is fully compatible with ATM 
  12.  
  13. for Windows, allowing it to be seen on screen at any size, and print to any  
  14. printer that has a Windows driver.  
  15.   
  16. INSTALLING THE POSTCRYPT FONT:  
  17.   
  18. 1. Copy the CALIG___.PFB file to your \PSFONTS directory.  
  19.   
  20. 2. Copy the CALIG___.PFM file to your \PSFONTS\PFM directory. (You can ignore 
  21.  
  22. the .AFM file since it is not useful with Windows. It may be useful to people 
  23.  
  24. running GEM applications, however.)  
  25.   
  26. 3. Open the ATM Control Panel and "Add..." Caligula to your list of ATM  
  27. fonts. You will have to open the \PSFONTS\PFM directory to allow ATM to see  
  28. your Caligula font.  
  29.   
  30. 4. If you have a PostScript printer, the following will be necessary. If your 
  31.  
  32. printer does not have PostScript, ignore this step. Open your WIN.INI file  
  33. with the Windows Notepad program.  (Do you have a backup of it? If not, make  
  34. one now.) At the end of the "softfonts" list, you will see something like:  
  35.   
  36. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\CALIG___.PFM  
  37.   
  38. You'll need to change this to:  
  39.   
  40. softfonts5=c:\psfonts\pfm\CALIG___.PFM,c:\psfonts\CALIG___.PFB  
  41.   
  42. Doing this allows the Windows PostScript driver to find your .PFB file and  
  43. download it to your PostScript printer. DO NOT use a semicolon between the  
  44. two  
  45. entries or you will cause some rather unpleasant problems.  
  46.   
  47. You should now exit Windows and restart. Caligula will now show up in  
  48. your Windows programs' font menus and you'll be able to choose it and use it  
  49. like any other font. ATM will allow you to see the font in all sizes and  
  50. print  
  51. it smoothly at all sizes.  
  52.   
  53. INFORMATION ABOUT FONTOGRAPHER 3.2:  
  54.   
  55. Fontographer 3.2 runs only on Macintosh computers. It runs on the $999.00  
  56. Macintosh Classic which has a 1.44Mb FDHD Superdrive capable of formatting  
  57. and  
  58. writing a PC 3-1/2" diskette. Fontographer 3.2 retails for $495.00 and is  
  59. available from all reputable dealers of Macintosh software. To make fonts for 
  60.  
  61. Windows with ATM from Fontographer 3.2 you can do the following:  
  62.   
  63. 1. Draw the font or autotrace it from scanned images pasted into Fontographer 
  64.  
  65. 3.2's Edit window. If you have already made Fontographer fonts, you can use  
  66. the "Open font..." dialog from the File menu to open the font and allow its  
  67. conversion to PC format. If you have PC PostScript fonts you wish to modify,  
  68. you can download them to any Adobe PostScript printer that can simultaneously 
  69.  
  70. communicate with both Macintoshes and PC's, then use Altsys' Metamorphosis  
  71. (retail $149.00) to convert the fonts to Fontographer format on the  
  72. Macintosh.  
  73.   
  74. 2. Select all the characters in the font and use the Path menu's "Correct  
  75. path  
  76. direction" item to make sure that the path directions in the font are  
  77. correct.  
  78.   
  79. 3. While all the characters are still selected, use the Edit menu's "Char  
  80. info..." item to make sure that all the characters in the font are filled  
  81. with  
  82. "Normal" fill and a "Tint" of 100% (DO NOT check the "Stroke" checkbox, since 
  83.  
  84. Adobe rules do not allow stroked characters in Type 1 fonts).  
  85.   
  86. 4. Use the Edit menu's "Font attributes..." dialog to turn on the "Automatic  
  87. PostScript and bitmap hints," "Generate Type 1 fonts," and "Adobe standard  
  88. character encoding" checkboxes. Do not turn on the "Use Flex feature if  
  89. possible" checkbox unless you are absolutely certain that your font can  
  90. benefit from Flex.  
  91.   
  92. 5. Use the File menu's "Generate fonts..." dialog and choose the  
  93. "PostScript-PC" item from the "Outline format:" popup menu. To save time, you 
  94.  
  95. can choose the "None" item from the "Bitmap format:" popup menu, since you  
  96. will not need to generate any kind of bitmap file. OK this dialog and the  
  97. result will be the .AFM, .PFB, and .PFM files described above. They can be  
  98. installed using the above instructions.
